NINE DROWNED IN LAKE

WOMEN AND CHILDREN VICTIMS

The Steamboat Frontenac Burned and Beached Opposite Farley's Point at Cayuga Saturday---Bodies of the Drowned Recovered and the Injured Being Cared For at the Homes of Persons Near the Scene of the Wrecked Steamer---Fire Broke Out in Midlake---Captain Brown the Last to Leave the Boat---Individual Acts of Heroism.

Auburn, N. Y., July 27.--- The steamboat Frontenac was burned and beached opposite Farleys Point at lake Cayuga to-day and nine lives were lost. The victims were all women and children passengers and all were drowned Several other passengers were severely burned before the boat could be beached. She lies to-night burned and blackened in seven feet of water. The bodies of the drowned women and children have been recovered and the injured are being cared for at the homes of persons near the scene of the wrecked steamer.

The following were drowned and the bodies subsequently recovered:

SIX-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OF HOWARD ABLE, South Bloomingburg TWO UNINDENTIFIED BODIES OF WOMEN.

The steamer Frontenac, an old side-wheeler, double deck craft, which has piled between Ithaca and Cayuga on Lake Cayuga for 25 years, left the former place this afternoon for the upper lake points, carrying 50 passengers and a crew of 12.

In midlake fire broke out in the engine room and, fanned by a stiff northeast wind, spread quickly to the afterward section of the boat. The crew of 12 men fought the flames at first, but, seeing that nothing could save the boat turned all their attention to saving the passengers.
