FIRE DRIVES HUNDREDS OF PERSONS OUT INTO RAIN
Thirteen Fire Companies Battle to Save Big Factory Building—Loss over $200,000
NEW YORK, Oct. 12. – Fire of unknown origin against which firemen from thirteen engine companies battled early today destroyed a six story brick factory building at 176-189 Grand street, causing a loss estimated at over $200,000.
Hundreds of families were driven from surrounding tenements in a pouring rain and were not permitted to return to their homes until after 3 a. m.
Shortly before 3 o’clock the firemen finally succeeded in getting the flames under control.
Several firemen were overcome by smoke and a watchman who had lost his way in the building was rescued on the third floor.
The building was occupied by the Colubbus (sic) Gas Fixture Co.
