Brooklyn, NY Gas Explosion, Jan 1889
A Startling Explosion.
BROOKLYN, Jan. 10.----An explosion at the Citizens' gas works last evening cause the total destruction of the three large tanks, involving a loss of $100,000. Three small tenement shanties near the works caught fire and were destroyed. The explosion caused great alarm in South Brooklyn and an immense crowd gathered about the works, which immediately caught fire. A second explosion occurred, and the people fled in all directions. For a time it was feared that some loss of life had occurred, but no casualties have been reported.
The 175 men quartered at the marine barracks in the navy yard left their building to look at the fire. While they were thus engaged the upper end of the eastern end of the barrack was blown down. The absence of the men probably saved their lives. Loss on barracks, $10,000.
