Malone, N. Y., April 17 -- Seven persons were burned to death, two were seriously injured by jumping from the third story, and others were rescued by firemen in a fire here early this morning which destroyed the De Wilson Hotel, an old wooden structure. The blaze was caused by an explosion.
The dead are:
ALBERT ROBIDEAU, Malone.
JOHN TIMMONS, Malone.
FRED TRUECHON, Malone, the hotel bartender.
TONY _______, a traveling musician.
PHILIP O'CONNOR, Pierceville, N. Y.
JOHN MOSS, Albany.
MICHAEL COONEY, Malone.
Those injured by jumping are:
MRS. PREMO of Eltonburg, N. Y., both legs broken.
A. MARTIN, a vaudeville actor, left arm and ankle broken.
All of the fifteen or more persons in the hotel were asleep when the explosion was heard by JOHN RHODES, a clerk in an express office a few yards away. He ran into the street and saw the hotel ablaze. The third story then was a mass of flames, and before the firemen arrived most of those persons on the upper floor had perished.
The work of the firemen was hintered by a coating of sheet iron on the outside walls of the hotel. With that exception the building was wooden throughout.
