Long Island, NY Forest Fire, May 1880
FIRES STARTED ON LONG ISLAND.
Patchogue, Long Island, May 13.---A dense fire has been burning since yesterday afternoon both east and west of this place, and thousands of dollars worth of timber have been burned, but the settlers manifested great alarm, and turned out to quell the flames. The heaviest loser is Mr. Gerard, but no estimate of individual or total loss has yet been made. The fire bordered the track of the Long Island Railroad, and is supposed to have originated from sparks from the pipes of tramps, who yesterday rested in the woods. The fire is now out.

COLLEGE POINT, Long Island, May 18.----Forest fires are still burning on the east end of Long Island to an alarming extent. Over 2,000 acres of woodland have been burned over in the Township of Brookhaven since Saturday. The people are praying for rain.
