Northeast, NY Train Wreck, Dec 1909
Three Killed In a Snow Storm Collision.
Eighteen Persons Were Injured When the Limited From St. Louis Rammed Express Train.
Erie, Pa., -- Three men were killed, seven persons were seriously injured, though none is believed to be fatally hurt, and eleven more were taken to Buffalo suffering from minor hurts as a result of a rear-end collision between the “Big Four†flyer, No. 26, known as the New York Central Limited, from St. Louis to New York City, and the Chicago to Boston special, known at No. 10, on the Lake Shore road near North East, six miles east of here. The wreck occurred during a raging snowstorm. All of the dead and injured were passengers on the Boston train.
The dead are: FRANCIS BERNARD, Cedar Point, Kan.; JACK CLAIB, Cedar Point, Kan.; ANTON LUND, Hullville, Cal. LUND had a ticket to New York and a Cunard steamship ticket from New York to Copenhagen.
The seriously injured are: W. L. McFADDEN, Buffalo, left shoulder broken; LUIGA ERIALE, Cincinnati, head cut and minor bruises; FRANK F. COOK, Green Bay, Wis., legs broken and spine injured; E. L. ELEGSTON, Jamaica Plain, Mass., legs fractured and hands injured; GEORGE E. McEANGLE, Indian Harbor, Conn., head bruised; AECOLA DELAQUES, Auburn, N. Y., badly cut; LOUIS ZIDOLE, traveling man, with nothing to indicate residence; GEORGE S. McFADDEN, Greenwich, Conn.; FRANK A. STARKS, Greenville, Wis.; MRS. EDNA LOSTUS, New York City; W. E. BURR, New York City, head bruised; T. J. HARDING, Cleveland, head bruised; M. MASTERS, Cincinnati; CLAYTON CHAPMAN, Elyria, O.; WILLIAM COALE, Warren, O.; three men whose names were not given.
The New York Central Limited usually meets the Twentieth Century, Limited at Cleveland and is made a part of that train. If both are not too heavy they are combined. If both are not too heavy they are combined. If there are too many cars the Limited is run in as the second section of the Twentieth Century. The Limited reached Cleveland before the Twentieth Century from Chicago got there and went on ahead.
The New York Central Limited left Cleveland at 9:05 o'clock, fifteen minutes late. Engineer BERGER, of Collinwood, and Fireman FALKENSTEIN, of Buffalo, were in the cab. The Boston flyer had pulled out at 7:57 o'clock. By the time she left Erie a blinding snowstorm was raging.
A freight preceded the Boston train and out of Erie she delayed the special, so that by the time the Limited left Erie she was only a few minutes behind the Boston train. Near North East the Boston flyer had come almost to a stop behind the freight. The Limited was bowling along at close to top speed. The snow obscured the rear signal lights of the flyer and the Limited plowed into her.
The flyer carried a smoker as the rear coach. It was splintered. It was in this that the dead and injured were riding. None of the passengers on the Limited was injured. Engineer BERGER and Fireman FALKENSTEIN were only slightly scratched.
