Utica, NY Train Accident, Aug 1844
SAD DISASTER ON THE RAILROAD -- THE COLLECTOR AND AN IRISH GIRL KILLED.
From a passenger on last evening's train, we have gathered the following particulars:
The passenger train of cars came out of Utica yesterday morning at three o'clock. About three miles out, something about the ash-pan of the locomotive getting out of order, the train was stopped to repair it. The freight train came out from Utica shortly after, and in the fog and darkness of the moring it was not discovered that the first train had stopped; consequently the freight train ran into the former with great force --
the hindmost, being an emigrant car, was shivered by the locomotive; and, sad to relate, the collector, MR. SMITH, who was in the act of passing out, was seized between the train, his thigh badly broken, and his body jammed to a jelly, he expired in about three hours. An Irish emigrant girl about 12 years old, was crushed by the collision, and died instantaneously. Both trains returned to Utica, bearing the lifeless bodies of the unfortunate sufferers.
