Amityville, NY Sanitarium Fire, Nov 1941
SIX PATIENTS FEARED DEAD IN HOSPITAL FIRE.
THREE ELDERLY MEN AND THREE ELDERLY WOMEN MISSING AFTER EARLY MORNING BLAZE.
Amityville, N.Y., Nov. 18 (AP) -- Six elderly patients -- three men and three women -- were missing and presumably burned to death today while thirty others, most of them bedridden and screaming in fear, were rescued as fire destroyed
a building of the Brunswick Home, a private sanatarium situated in this south shore, Long Island, town.
Dr. Convas L. Markham, superintendent of the institution for the care of diabetic and nervous cases, said there was a possibility one of the missing men was not in the building at the time of the fire.
Fire Chief Lester Gardiner said the fire started in the kitchen of the building.
One patient was seen screaming for help in a blazing, first-floor room by nurses and firemen who were powerless to help. Dr. Markham said, while at least four and possibly five others were trapped on the top floor of the structure.
