CIGARET IS BLAMED FOR FIRE FATAL TO 8.

AGED INMATES ARE BURNED TO DEATH WHEN HOME IS DESTROYED.

Schenectady, N.Y., Dec. 16. -- (INS) -- Pending completion of an official inquiry, investigators expressed belief tonight that a cigaret being smoked in bed started a fire which early today destroyed the Riverside Convalescent home and burned to death eight aged inmates.
The home, four miles west of Schenectady, was destroyed within an hour and the flames spread so rapidly most of the victims were trapped in their rooms. Nine patients were carried to safety through the flames, but two were in a critical condition from burns and shock.
Damage to the two-story frame structure, which was converted from a private dwelling last year, was estimated at $20,000.
The victims, all from Schenectady and nearby communities, were:

MRS. ROBERT DECAMP, 93.
HERBERT F. SPARROW, 83.
MISS MARGARET MULROONEY, 70.
MRS. ADIE HUMPHRIES, 76.
MR. BOEHM, 73.
MRS. TAYLOR, 84.
