Tallman, NY Convalescent Home Fire, Feb 1946

FIVE AGED WOMEN BURNED TO DEATH, TWO OTHERS HURT.

Tallman, N.Y. -- (AP) -- Five aged women were burned to death and at least two others injured seriously Sunday in a fire that swept the second floor of the Pinehurst Convalescent Home.
Several of the patients were rescued from the flames by Nurse MABEL TRUMPER.
The dead were:
MRS. CATHERINE JERSEY, 80, of Haverstraw, N.Y.
MRS. ELSIE PLATT, 71, of Suffern Park, N.Y.
MRS. ALICE SHEROW, 85, of Mahwah, N.J.
MRS. MARIE KLIPPLE, 60, of Spring Valley, N.Y.
MRS. MARY HONNELL, 73, of Suffern, N.Y.
As stated by Police Chief Abe Stern.
Stern said the fire was discovered by MISS BEATRICE JANE SMITH, a nurse at the home, in a closet under the stairs on the second floor of the home. Its origin was not determined immediately.
Before the blaze was extinguished fire companies and equipment were called from Suffern, Monsey and Spring Valley, N.Y., all in Rockland County.
Three rooms on the second floor of the three-story structure were charred and the fire swept up the stairs to the third floor where the heat was so intense wax candles on tables were melted down.
