Ulster County, NY Tornado, Sept 1858

TERRIBLE TORNADO IN ULSTER COUNTY, N. Y.

TWO LADIES KILLED

A very destructive tornado visited a few towns in Ulster County, last Wednesday, tearing up and destroying everything in its course, blowing down trees, fences and even dwellings, and in one of these dwellings were a number of persons, who were crushed by the falling building, killing three and seriously wounding three others. It appears that it made its first appearance at Dewittville, continuing westward in the direction of Smithville, five miles distant. At Dewittville the tornado left a terrible mark as it passed on its destructive course. The houses of MR. J. SMITH and MR. HOYT were blown down. There was no one is the former, MRS. HOYT and her three children being on a visit at the house of MRS. SMITH -- MRS. HOYT was instantly killed and MRS. SMITH so badly injured that she died in a few hours – A lady named MRS. HORNBECK, who was also in the house, was so seriously injured that her life is despaired of. The three children of MRS. HOYT were also badly injured. MR. SMITH was in the city at the time of the accident. The tornado passed on its course towards Smithville, but whether any more lives were lost or property destroyed we do not learn.
