Port Washington, NY Oil Tank Explosion, May 1940

THREE MEN DIE IN OIL TANK EXPLOSION.

Port Washington, N. Y., May 3. -- (AP) -- Explosion of a 125,000 gallon oil tank on the shore of Manhasset bay killed three men today and injured three others and shook buildings two miles away.
Killed in the explosion were:
HARRY BERG, 39, president of BERG Oils, Inc., owner of the tank.
HENRY OATES, 23, of Port Washington.
MARVIN CHASE, about 30, of New Rochelle, both employes of the firm.
The explosion occurred while one section of the 8 compartment tank was being cleaned. Firemen theorized the explosion might have been caused by gasoline from one of the other sections seeping into the portion in which CHASE was working, mixing with the air to make an explosive combination.
