Sackett's Harbor, NY Business Fire, Jan 1887
Watertown, N.Y., Jan. 4. -- Last night about 11 o'clock fire broke out in the ENGELHART Building, in the village of Sackett's Harbor. The town is not supplied with modern apparatus for fighting fires, and before anything could be done the flames had made such headway that they could not be controlled by the single band engine and the bucket brigade. The building where the fire originated is occupied by AARON STEARNS as a dwelling and store. This structure was totally consumed, and the flames communicating to other buildings, the finest in the village, they, too, were soon in ashes. Assistance was telegraphed for, and the Watertown Fire Department responded to the general alarm and went to Sackett's Harbor to help save the place from a most disastrous conflagration. The Watertown firemen and the soldiers of the Twelfth United States Infantry stationed at Madison Barracks fought the fire manfully, but did not succeed in subduing the flames until nearly $50,000 worth of property was destroyed. The losses, so far as can be ascertained, are about as follows:
WILLIAM STOKES, store and dwelling, $2,500; no insurance.
W. B. DUFFY, of Rochester, large three-story malt house, loss about $10,000; insurance unknown.
AARON STEARNS, loss on goods about $4,000; insurance, $3,000.
E. W. McEVERY, grocer, loss on building and stock about $2,500; insurance $500.
MRS. CAROLINE ROBBINS, of Buffalo, loss on building $10,000; partly insured.
MRS. ROBBINS'S building was occupied by H. J.
LANG as general store and BALLARD & NORTHAM, of Watertown, undertakers; LANE'S loss is about $2,500, fully insured; BALLARD & NORTHAM loss about $600; uninsured. Several other occupants of the ROBBINS Block sustain small losses, H. F. ENGLEHART, of Watertown, loss on building about $5,000; insurance $1,500.
