Sandia, NM Train Wreck, May 1908
NUMBER EIGHT HITS FREIGHT TRAIN
Smashup at Sandia Last Night Results in Slaughtered Sheep and Some Badly Frightened Passengers.
As a result of eastbound Santa Fe train No. 8 crashing into the rear end of eastbound freight train No. 859 at Albuquerque at 6 o'clock last night, main line traffic was delayed for several hours, the engine of No. 8 was badly damaged, the caboose on the freight train was demolished, two carloads of sheep were derailed and many sheep killed. The passengers on No. 8 received a severe shaking up and several of the women were badly frightened, but as far as could be learn last night, none of the passengers or trainmen were injured. The exact cause of the wreck is not known.
The main line was cleared up after several hours' hard work by the wrecking crew which left here for the scene of the wreck. No. 8 arrived about midnight, being hauled into the city by the freight engine. The passenger train was in charge of Conductor Frank Murphy and the freight was in charge of Conductor Greenlaw and Engineer Maloney.
