Lordsburg, NM (near) Bomber Crash, Sep 1943

FIVE FLIERS DIE IN PLANE CRASH.

Lordsburg, Sept. 27 -- (AP) -- A four-engine (B-24) bomber crashed in mountainous country 25 miles west of here late Sunday, instantly killing five army airmen, occupants of the plane.
Army officers from the Lordsburg internment camp said the plane was believed to have crashed while on a flight from Tucson, Ariz., to Biggs Field.
An explosion was believed to have occurred in midair, as wreckage was strewn over a mile area.
Bodies of the five army men are being held at Lordsburg. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

DEAD IN NEW MEXICO ACCIDENT IDENTIFIED.

Tucson, Ariz., Sept. 27 (AP) -- The bodies of four men killed in a crash of a Davis-Monthan field, four engine B-24 bomber west of Lordsburg, N.M., yesterday were identified today.
Capt. JOHN W. WALLACE, JR., survived by his wife, Mrs. Jeannette L. Wallace, Tuscon.
Second Lt. WALTER P. ROBINSON, son of Rev. Walter P. Robinson, Clairton, Pa.
S/Sgt. PIERRE W. THOMPSON, son of Orville W. Thompson, Dallas, Tex.
Cpl. ERNEST O'NEAL, son of E. H. O'Neal, New London, Tex.
It was stated at the base this afternoon that there was no official report on the presence of a fifth man in the ship when it crashed.
