Tucumcari, NM Train Wreck, Aug 1933
SEVEN DEAD IN A NEW MEXICO TRAIN WRECK.
CRACK EASTBOUND GOLDEN STATE LIMITED OF THE ROCK ISLAND WRECKED NEAR TUCUMCARI, N.M.
ONE PASSENGER IS MISSING.
THE ENGINE AND SEVEN OF THE 12 COACHES PLUNGE INTO A SWOLLEN STREAM TODAY.
Dalhart, Tex., Aug. 29. -- (UP) -- Two additional bodies have been removed from the wreckage of the Golden State Limited near Tucumcari, New Mexico, division headquarters of the Rock Island railroad was advised here today.
The report said seven were known dead and one missing.
Tucumcari, New Mex., Aug. 29 -- (UP) -- Five persons were killed and a member of the crew reported lost when the crack eastbound Golden State Limited of the Rock Island railroad was wrecked near here today.
The engine and seven of the 12 coaches were plunged into a swollen stream, reports said.
A bulletin sent to division headquarters at Dalhart, Texas said 25 were injured.
The injured were brought to this little village of 3,000 in the New Mexico mountains, 150 miles east of Albuquerque.
The scene of the wreck was approximately five miles west of Tucumcari.
The Golden State Limited is operated jointly by the Southern Pacific and Rock Island. From Los Angeles to Tucumcari it travels on tracks of the Southern Pacific and east of Tucumcari on those of the Rock Island. At the time of the wreck the train was on the track of the Southern Pacific.
Bodies of four passengers and the engineer were brought here by rescue workers. It was feared the raging waters of the stream had taken additional lives.
