An Electric Bolt Stunned a Young Woman and Killed Her Escort

SHE WILL PROBABLY DIE

The Lightning Struck a Tree and Glanced to an Umbrella. A Deadly Flash.

DURING THE ELECTRIC STORM Thursday night lightning killed a young man and probably fatally wounded a young woman at Barnegat. They were seeking shelter fro the storm when the electric bolt struck a tree and glanced to the metal point of their upraised umbrella.

BARNEGAT, N.J., May 9 – During a heavy downpour of rain and an intense electrical storm, ANTHONY CAMBURN, of Waretown, was struck by a thunderbolt at this place last night and instantly killed. Miss BEULAH RIDGWAY, of this town, was also injured so seriously that she may not recover. Young Camburn, who is about 21 years of age, was employed by CHARLES MARTIN, whose hotel, the Hopkins House, was burned
down by the forest fires a week ago. With Mr Martin he had driven Miss Ridgway home from Waretown, and alighted with her at the door.

Martin remained in the carriage to hold the team, and Camburn carried the umbrella over the woman's head. As they entered the gate an electric bolt struck a tree by the side of the gate, ran down the umbrella, and a portion of it went through Camburn's derby hat. The couple were knocked senseless.

Camburn was dead when picked up. the woman regained consciousness after several hours, but the physicians fear she will her understanding if she lives, and death would be no surprise.
