Wharton, NJ House Fire, Dec 1910

BOYS LOCKED IN; BURNED.

Mother Returns from Shopping Trip to Find Children Dead.

Special to The New York Times.

WHARTON, N. J., Dec. 23.---Mrs. William Sumboy went to Dover to buy Christmas presents, leaving her two children locked in the house. The house caught fire in her absence and the two youngsters, John, 6, and William, 2½, were burned to death.

The fire was discovered by Michael McShain, who made a desperate effort to save the boys, and managed to drag the younger one to the outer air. The child was so badly burned, however, that he died in a few minutes.

A year ago Mrs. Sumboy's husband shot her and is now serving a five-year sentence in State's prison.
