Riverside, NJ Resort Fire, 1894
SUMMER RESORT BLAZE.
A Big Hotel and Several Cottages Destroyed by Fire.
Providence, July 24.-- Fire broke out at Riverside, a summer resort 10 miles south of this city, at 11 o’clock yesterday evening. In less than an hour nearly $80,000 worth of property had been destroyed. The fire started between two big buildings that constituted Comstock’s hotel, and when it was discovered the two big building were in flames.
The hotel, which was completely destroyed, was valued at about $50,000. Five cottages, all occupied by prominent Providence business men, were also destroyed. The fire spread so rapidly that it was impossible for the occupants of the cottages to save anything more than their person apparel. While the total loss will not exceed $90,000, it is almost complete, as insurance was but slight. The fire officials believe that the fire was the work of incendiaries.
