Special to The New York Times.

ATLANTIC CITY, Aug. 19.--the Wendell and L'Esplanade Apartments, on the Boardwalk near Connecticut Avenue, were damaged by fire early this afternoon. The flames spread rapidly, so that the forty-eight apartments in the two buildings were all damaged before the fire was put out.

Both houses had many guests, but practically all were on the beach at the time, and none ws in danger, though many lost their belonging. Personal property and thousands of dollars in money left in the apartments by guests were recovered by Captain Bagnell's Boardwalk Squad.
