Rahway, NJ Trailer Truck And Jeep Collision, July 1949

2-VEHICLE MISHAP TAKES FIVE LIVES.

Rahway, N.J., July 21 -- (INS) -- Five persons were burned to death and a sixth was critically injured today when a trailer truck overturned on a packed jeep at a bridge entrance in Rahway.
The driver of the iron-laden trailer, REUBEN CHILOSSKY of Philadelphia, was not injured.
He told police the jeep carrying six Negroes, including a Rahway policeman, stopped suddenly as he was heading up the ramp to the Hazelwood Avenue Bridge on Route 25, forcing him to swerve to the left to avoid a collision.
The truck rammed over a safety island, causing the trailer to jack-knife and topple over on the jeep, whose gas tank exploded.
The dead were identified as:
Rahway Patrolman GILBERT BROWN, 28.
EDNA PARKS, 22.
WILLIAM BELLINGER, 25.
OTIS PEARL, 26.
WILLIE LEE BASKERVILLE, 21.
BELLINGER'S brother, LAWRENCE, 31, the jeep's only survivor, was taken to Rahway Hospital in critical condition.
