Ridgefield, NJ Film Plant Explosion, June 1927
DYNAMITE USED TO FIGHT FILM FIRE.
ONE MAN BURNED WHEN EXPLOSION WRECKS NEW JERSEY PLANT.
Fort Lee, N. J., June 15. -- (By Associated Press) Firemen resorted to dynamite this afternoon to check flames spreading from an explosion in a film plant which for three hours threatened part of the borough of Ridgefield.
AUGUST BOSCHE, one of the five men employed in the plant of the Plasteroid company, in which the explosion occurred, was burned about the face and hands, and the other four employes, after having been reported missing for a time, were found to have escaped without injury.
BOSCHE said that he believed the explosion was caused by friction in one of the machines used in the room in which motion picture film was washed. The roof was blown off the one-story frame plant and burning film was shot fifty feet into the air while the neighborhood was bombarded with tin containers.
Three houses were destroyed and a number of others damaged. Fire departments were called in from eight nearby towns and at 2:30 p.m., the fire was declared under control.
