HAMPTON, BEACH, N. H., June 26.---The business and residential section of Hampton Beach, one of New England's popular summer resorts, was virtually destroyed by fire early today, causing damage variously estimated at from three hundred thousand to five hundred thousand dollars. No one was injured. Defective wiring is believed to have been the cause.
The fire burned six hotels, from 35 to 40 cottages, a theatre, a garage, several stores and the post office. Help was summoned from five nearby towns.
Starting in the Strand hotel, the flames spread rapidly through the main section of the resort.
