MERCHANTS SUFFER BIG LOSS BY FIRE.

OMAHA RETAIL DISTRICT RAVAGED BY THAT EATS UP $400,000 OF PROPERTY.

Omaha, Neb., April 13. -- One of the most valuable blocks of retail property in Omaha was seriously threatened and damage amounting to nearly $400,000 was done by a fire which totally destroyed the Ames estate building at 215 and 216 South Sixteenth street and 1608 and 1610 Farnam street early this morning. The fire was one of the most spectacular in Omaha for years. The burned building was occupied by J. L. BRANDEIS & Sons, the J. G. McCorey five and ten cent store, the Famous Cloak and Suit company, the Haines Drug company, and the Surgical Supply company. The whole building was formerly owned by the Ames estate of Boston.

J. E. HARMON, manager of the McCrorey store, was slightly injured while returning to the building to recover $1,100 in currency.

The following are the individual losses and insurance:
Building loss, $100,000; partially insured.
J. L. BRANDEIS & Sons, stock loss, $100,000; about $80,000 insurance.
J. G. McCrorey, notion stock, loss $40,000; about $40,000 insurance.
J. G. McCrorey, fixtures, loss $63,000; insured.
Omaha Surgical Supply company, stock, loss, $18,000; insured.
Haines Drug company, stock, loss, $10,000; about $10,000 insurance.
Famous Cloak and Suit Company, stock loss, about $50,000.
