Fort Kearney, NE Tornado, Jun 1859

Great Tornado on the Plains

We learn from the Council Bluffs Bugle, of the 7th inst., that MR. C. DURHAM and company, of Marion county, Iowa recently met with a terrible disaster on the Plains, about twenty miles above Fort Kearney.

Just as the company had encamped for the night a terrible tornado blew up, accompanied by torrents of hail stones. Three wagons were literaly[sic] smashed to atoms. MR. DURHAM'S trunk was carried off and never found; one ox was carried over the creek; their ox yokes were carried two and a half miles from camp, and the entire company were carried from fifty to one hundred and fifty yards; their outfit was destroyed, and a tree ten inches in diameter was up rooted and carried seven miles. Fortunately no lives were lost.
