Dunbar, NE Train Wreckers Strike, Jan 1887

RAILROAD TRAINS WRECKED.

TWO MEN KILLED AND SEVERAL TRAINMEN INJURED.

Atchison, Kan., Jan. 12 -- The Missouri Pacific passenger train from Omaha due here at 3:45 A. M., was thrown from the track near Dunbar, Neb., 106 miles north of here last night, killing JAMES B. DEWITT, the engineer, and perhaps fatally injuring FRANK O. CHENOWITH, the express messenger, besides injuring a number of other persons. The rail was removed by two or more malicious men, as a farmer who happened to be up saw in the moonlight two men hastily leave the spot as the train was approaching, and an examination showed that the spikes and fish-plates had been removed, and close by a claw bar belonging to the Burlington and Missouri River Road was found. The toolhouse of the Burlington and Missouri River at Dunbar was also found broken open. The wreck occurred on a curve where the road rounds a sharp bluff. The entire train was turned over. Two men who were yesterday turned out of the station at Dunbar are suspected. The following trainmen were injured:
FRANK O. CHENOWITH, of Kansas City, express messenger, head hurt and severe internal injuries, may die.
WALTER P. GATES, of Kansas City, fireman, badly scalded and hand crushed.
FRANK GARRETT, Atchison, brakeman, face hurt.
Following are the names of the injured passengers:
J. T. BURKHART, Buffalo, Wyoming.
JOHN PICKETT, Austin, Texas.
JOHN GEIGER, St. Louis.
E. CONNER, Omaha.
MISS MOLLIE HYDE, Beloit.
M. G. MORAN, Omaha.
GEORGE COON, Philadelphia.
M. KENNON, Omaha.
MRS. WALTER E. KENNEDY, FOREPAUGH'S Circus.
MR. MOLSTEN, Kansas City.

MRS. F. CROSS, Omaha.
C. G. BURTON, Omaha.
MATTHEW LINDELL, Omaha.
JAMES McCROLEY, Omaha.

The most seriously injured of these is MRS. KENNEDY, the circus rider, whose collarbone is fractured. The injured were all brought to Atchison by special train and cared for at a hotel by DR. HOLLAND, the surgeon of the road.
