Grand Island, NE Boy Prevents Train Wreck in Blizzard, Feb 1906

FARMER LAD SAVES TRAIN FROM WRECK

FLAGS EXPRESS IN TIME TO SAVE IT FROM GOING INTO THE DITCH.

Herald Special Service.

Grand Island, Neb., Feb. 15.---Facing a fierce blizzard, Charlie Hudson, 12 years old, son of a farmer, flagged a fast passenger train of the Union Pacific and prevented a disastrous wreck. While crossing the track on his way home from school the boy noticed 18 inches of the track torn away. Knowing the east bound train was about due, he started to run up the track against bitter northeast wind, waving his cap in one hand and a handkerchief in the other. As the train approached he stood in the middle of the track till the whistle told him that he had been seen. A moment later the brakes were applied and the express came to a halt within a few feet of a broken rail. The train crew says the boy's action undoubtedly prevented a terrible wreck, the train being filled with passengers.
