Funk, NE Storm, Jun 1902

Storm Leaves Mark Near Funk.

Funk, Neb., June 8. – (Special.) – The most terrific wind and rain storm that was ever known here prevailed yesterday morning. The storm seemed to gather in the west part of the county and traveled southeast, and was accompanied by a wonderful electric display with an almost constant crash of thunder. The wind came straight and had sufficient velocity to do an immense amount of damage. Reports are coming in but are meager yet. The house of A. L. Pennington was blown entirely away, his wife receiving some injuries, he and three children escaping unscathed. The large house of J. D. Watson was unroofed and blown from the foundation, as was also that of his neighbor, Nils Lureson. Northeast of town Ben Snedburg’s large house was blown from its foundation and badly twisted. A great many barns, granaries, outbuildings and windmills were blown down and the wheat fields, that stood from three to four feet high, promising an immense yield, are flat on the ground. It is reported that three miles west crops were ruined by hail. The wires are down and it is said that fifty telegraph poles are down on this section of seven miles. It is feared that loss of life may be reported later.
