FIREMAN HURT IN BLAZE AT EAGLE-PICHER PLANT

Fire attributed to sparks from a welding torch igniting a large quantity of stored paper bags caused considerable damage at 10:30 o’clock yesterday morning in the insulation department at the Eagle-Picher Lead Company plant in Smelter Hill.

Dan Abernathy, a fireman, suffered a severe gash on one temple during the fire when he was struck by a piece of glass from a shattered window. He was taken to St. John’s hospital in a Hurlbut ambulance for emergency treatment.

Firemen brought the blaze under control without serious damage to the building or to insulation materials.
