ONE KILLED, 2 HURT IN RAIL COLLISION

MISSOURI PACIFIC PASSENGER MEET HEAD-ON!

Fireman Johnson Crushed and Engineer May Die-Passengers Are Uninjured.

Jefferson City, Mo., Dec 26.-One man was killed, another probably fatally injured and a third seriously hurt near Boonville this afternoon when a passenger train and a freight on the river division of the Missouri Pacific met in a head-on collision.
The dead man is Fireman Daniel Johnson of the passenger train, who was pinned under the engine and crushed. Engineer Edward Gorsuch, also of the passenger train, who was caught under a pile of coal thrown from the tender, is injured internally and it is believed he can not survive. Frank Nichols, a brakeman of the passenger train, is bruised and cut, but his injuries are not considered necessarily fatal.

The trains which are said to have been running at a high rate of speed, met without warning. According to a statement given out last night by afficials [sic] of the road, the crew of the freight train had orders to meet the passenger train at the H.K. siding. It is believed that the freight crew overlooked the order and ran by the siding until it met the passenger.

When Engineer J. Suttle of the freight train and his fireman, Dan Beaver, saw that a collision was inevitable, they jumped and escaped injury. The impact of the collision shook up those riding in the passenger train, but none was injured. The passengers were taken to their destinations on a special train that was hurried to the scene of the wreck.
