FIREMAN IS STRUCK BY ENGINE

MIKE DURRAN CAME NEAR BEING KILLED SUNDAY

Was assisting in Switching in the Local Burlington Yards When Accident Occurred.

Mike Durran, a fireman on engine No. 72, pulling an east bound Burlington freight, came near being killed in the local yards Sunday afternoon by being hit with an engine.

Durran, who was assisting the crew in switching, had jumped from his engine near the water crane east of the depot. When he started to make the jump his foot slipped in some manner and he did not clear the track and the pilot beam of the engine struck him. The man was thrown several feet in the air and fell in the right-of-way. He was picked up unconscious and placed on the depot platform and a physician summoned. After a careful examination it was discovered no bones were broken but he was badly bruised about the head and shoulders.

The injured man was later placed on a train and taken to his home in Brookfield.
