St. Louis, MO Theatre Accident, Dec 1906
JULIA MARLOWE'S ESCAPE.
PAINT BRIDGE COLLAPSES UNDER THE WEIGHT OF MUSICIANS.
Special to The New York Times.
St. Louis, Dec. 8. -- After a narrow escape from death on the stage of the Garrick Theatre last night, JULIA MARLOWE to-day refused to allow the orchestra to play on the stage of the theatre, and as a consequence the music between acts of "Jeanne D'Arc" this afternoon and "Hamlet" to-night, was played in the lobby of the Garrick.
The management of the theatre placed twenty-eight chairs in the orchestra pit last night, sold them to patrons, and put the musicians on the paint bridge back of the stage. The bridge collapsed under the weight of the musicians while MISS MARLOWE, waiting for her cue, was standing within two feet of it. One of the flying timbers narrowly missed her head. EDWARD VOIGHT, a property man, standing near MISS MARLOWE, was struck in the side, one of his ribs being broken.
