Kansas City, MO Area Train Plunges Into Missouri River, Sept 1909

SIX DEAD IN WABASH WRECK.

FLOODS UNDERMINED ROADBED THIRTY MILES FROM KANSAS CITY, MO.

Kansas City, Mo. -- Six lilves were lost, three persons were fatally hurt, and some fifty were injured in the wrecking of a Wabash passenger train that plunged into the Missouri River thirty miles east of Kansas City. The dead are:
CHARLES FLOWERS, engineer.
LOUIS BOND, fireman.
HARRY ECKERT, baggageman.
DANIEL KING, two-year-old son of E. T. KING, Eldon, Mo.
CHAS. ANTHONY, laborer.
JESSE OLDHAM, laborer.
Mortally hurt:
FRANK GARDNER, of Mount Vernon, Ohio.
MRS. S. S. HACKETT, Errick, Mo.
MISS IRENE DORTON, Errick, Mo.
Of the eight cars in the train five coaches with the locomotive were in the river, with the water covering all of them except one end of a sleeping car. A chair car and two Pullmans remained uninjured.
At the scene of the wreck the river makes a bend, and the railroad follows it. For days flood waters have undermined the roadbed, making it too weak to hold up the heavy trains.
