New Madrid, MO Survey Boat BEAVER Capsizes In Storm, June 1913

NINE DROWN DURING STORM.

SURVEY BOAT GOES DOWN, CARRYING U.S. ENGINEERS TO DEATH.

New Madrid, Mo., June, 22. -- Nine members of a party of fourteen United States engineers and other government employes were drowned near New Madrid, Mo., late today when the United States survey boat Beaver, which the party was aboard, was capsized in a windstorm.
Those drowned are:
C. S. WILLIAMSON, chief engineer, Mason, O.
J. M. McCONNELL, a recent graduate of the law department of Cornell University.
Capt. LAMB, pilot.
A. D. COSTON, engineer.
HARRY SHERRELL, mate, Cottonwood, Tenn.
PHIL WRAY, Jackson, Tenn.
A. FREEMAN, deck hand.
Two rodmen, names not known.
None of the bodies has been recovered.
The boat sank near Hotchkiss light in Snakey Bend, and as soon as a report of the accident was received here word was sent to Memphis and the government steamer Chiska hurried to the scene.
Those saved are:
J. H. MILLER, Millersburg, Ky., engineer.
ROY THOMPSTON, of Bowth Point, Tenn., deck hand.
MIKE MORRIS, of Cottonwood Point, deck hand.
CURTIS BENNETT, a deck hand.
PAUL HAPPY, night watchman.
