New Madrid, MO (near) Steamboat CALEDONIA Explosion, Apr 1830

ANOTHER STEAMBOAT EXPLOSION.
From the Cincinnati Advertiser, April 27.

It is with the most lively feelings of regret we have again to accounce another of those calamitous events, which have so often occurred of late upon the Western waters. The superior Steamboat CALEDONIA, Capt. RUSSELL, on her way up from New Orleans, burst her boiler about nine miles below New Madrid, which killed nine, badly wounded seven, and slightly wounded eight, as follows, viz:
Killed:
PHILIP ORMS, deck passenger.
JOHN SHERIDIN, deck passenger.
JONAS CHAMBERLAIN, deck passenger.
JOSEPH RUSSELL, engineer.
JOHN GREENUP, crew man.
_____ THOMAS, crew man.
ADAM TAYLOR, colored fireman.
ANTHONY HAWKINS, steward.
Badly Scalded:
NOEL DOSNEY.
ASA LEVITT.
WILLIAM CHEESEMAN.
SAMUEL MURPHY.
THOMAS PEEL.
JAMES HAMILTON.
______ FRANK.
Slightly Scalded:
J. D. HUGHES.
HENRY CARLISLE.
CHARLES MOON, black man.
JOHN L. DICKSON.
FRANCIS WORLEY.
PELLETIN MARSHALL.
MANLY VICKERY, Esq.
The explosion took place while the boat was and had been under way for several hours. The damage, other than the loss of the boiler, done the boat, is but trifling. The explosion is ascribable to an original but unknown defectiveness in one of the boilers.
