Bourbon, MO Private Plane Crash, May 1947
PLANE CRASH KILLS MID-STATE PRINTING COMPANY OFFICERS.
ACCIDENT OCCURS DURING PICNIC ATTENDED BY LOCAL PEOPLE.
St. Louis, Mo., May 31 -- (AP) -- BERNARD VON HOFFMAN, 46, pioneer St. Louis aviator and explorer, and his nephew, ALBERT VON HOFFMAN, 29, were killed tonight when a plane piloted by the elder man crashed on the VON HOFFMAN farm near Bourbon, Mo. Cause of the crash was not determined.
BERNARD VON HOFFMAN was a son of the late ALBERT VON HOFFMAN, founder of the Von Hoffmann Holding Corp., of which BERNARD was president. BERNARD narrowly escaped death in 1921 when a balloon he was piloting in the Gordon Bennett race came down in the Irish sea. He represented this country in the race.
In 1940 he made a six-week trip to the interior of Dutch Guiana to take pictures and help obtain specimens for the St. Louis zoo.
ALBERT VAN HOFFMANN was vice-president of the Von Hoffman Press, a job printing concern, and the Mid-State Printing Company of Jefferson City.
The accident and death of the two men cast a pall over a picnic being held yesterday on the VON HOFFMANN farm for the office employes of the Von Hoffman Press and the Mid-State Printing Company here. The commercial plant at the corner of Madison and East Capitol is owned by Von Hoffmanns.
Among those from the office here attending the picnic were: Mr. and Mrs. I. T. Alderson, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bassman, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Botz, Mr. and Mrs. James Koecher, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hauser, Mrs. Nora Veits, Mr. and Mrs. Baer, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Payne, Mr. and Mrs. William Fromme, and Mr. and Mrs. Lueckenhoff.
