ONE DEAD; TWO DYING

Southeastern Limited Wrecked In Missouri.

DUE TO A DEFECTIVE TRACK

Fireman Killed, Engineer Fatally Scalded and Mail Clerk Probably Mortally Hurt – Engine and Mail and Baggage Cars Turned Over.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Aug. 26. -- Northbound passenger train No. 206 on the St. Louis & San Francisco railway, known as the Southeastern Limited, was partially derailed this morning two miles north of Brandsville, Mo. JAMES S. O'NEILL, the fireman from Springfield, was killed; H. B. COLVIA, engineer of Springfield, was fatally scalded; a mail clerk was probably mortally hurt and several passengers were more or less seriously injured.

The engine and the mail and baggage cars turned over and were badly damaged.

A telephone message from the scene says the accident resulted from a defective track.

The dead and injured were transferred to another train and taken to Springfield. The train was due in Kansas City at 10 A. M. and carried a heavy list of passengers.

TWO FATALITIES IN WRECK

Train on St. Louis & San Francisco Partially Derailed.

SPRINGFIELD, MO. Aug. 26. –Northbound passenger train No. 206, on the St. Louis & San Francisco railway, known as the Southeastern Limited, running between Birmingham, Memphis and Kansas City, was partially derailed at 1:15 this morning two miles north of Brandsville, Mo., twenty miles from the Arkansas state line. JAMES J. O’NEAL, the fireman, from Springfield, was killed; H. B. COLVIN, the engineer, of Springfield, was fatally scalded; a mail clerk was probably mortally hurt, and several passengers were more or less seriously injured.

The engine and the mail and baggage cars turned over and were badly damaged. The smoker left the tracks, but remained upright. The chair car and the two Pullmans remained on the tracks. A telephone message from the scene says that the accident resulted from a defective track.

The dead and injured were transferred to another train and taken to Springfield. The train was due in Kansas City at 10 this morning and carried a heavy list of passengers.
