THE MISSISSIPPI DISASTER.

ADDITIONAL FROM THE STEAMER W. R. CARTER -- THIRTY-ONE LIVES LOST.

Cincinnati, Ohio, Monday, Feb. 5.
The steamer W. R. Carter exploded her boiler thirty-five miles above Vicksburgh, at 4 o'clock on Friday morning. The boiler passed through the forward part of the cabin. After the explosion the boat took fire and continued to burn until 7 o'clock, compelling all who had escaped death by explosion to jump into the river. The boat soon after went down.
Capt. HURD had just gone off watch when the explosion occurred, and was not afterward seen.
The steamer Evening Star picked up all the survivors found floating in the water, and carried them to Vicksburgh.
It is not yet known how many lives were lost.
Memphis, Monday, Feb. 5.
By the explosion and burning of the steamer W. R. Carter, on Friday, above Vicksburgh, thirty-one persons were killed and eleven wounded. Fifty persons were saved.
Vicksburgh, Miss., Saturday, Feb. 3.
There were 200 passengers aboard the Carter, 125 of whom were lost at the lowest estimate. Eight bodies were taken from the river yesterday and to-day, among them MRS. DAVID NOELL, of Texas; MR. J. BREWER, Paymaster, of Ohio. These were all that were identified.
DR. COALL BOUNS, Yazoo City; DR. T. L. VICE and Lieut. WILLIAMS, of Vicksburgh, known to be lost. JOHN JOHNSON, of Texas, who was injured, died to-day.
