Oxford, MS Tornado, Oct 1896
OXFORD, Miss., October 29 – A terrible cyclone passed through the eastern part of Lafayette county at 4 o'clock this afternoon demolishing farm houses and uprooting trees of all sizes. The news has just reached here being reported by Hon. W. V. SULLIVAN, Democratic candidate for congress, and T. J. HARKINS. SULLIVAN had been speaking at Tula and returned to Oxford, expecting to speak at Abbeyville to-night. He and HARKINS were caught in the storm's path, the winds swooping down upon them. He was driving a double team and buggy. The wind lifted the vehicle, horses and all, and carried it 200 yards. The buggy was completely demolished by falling timber. Neither the men nor horses were seriously hurt, HARKINS sustaining slight injuries by a flying fence rail. The storm passed through the outskirts of the town of Delay and demolished several houses. The house of MILTON and KRIDGE was blown away but the wife and seven children who were in the house miraculously escaped with slight bruises. The extent of the damage cannot be given and no casualties reported. Not a tree was left standing in the cyclone's path. Further details can not be had to-night.
