SWEPT OUT OF SIGHT!
A Mississippi Town Destroyed by the Waters---Only One Home Left Standing.
VICKSBURG, Miss., March 31.----The town of Skipwith, eight miles north of here, was swept out of sight on Saturday by the waters from a big crevasse at the south end of Lake Washington. Only one residence remains---that of J. A. Root.
The water is from four to eleven feet deep in the streets and all except the stone buildings are gone.
Efforts to rescue stocks of goods proved futile and dangerous and in consequence were abandoned. So sudden was the inundation that no one had more than time to make a hasty run for the intent portions of the dyke north of the crevasse. Few saved even a full suit of clothes.
