6 PERISH IN NURSING HOME FIRE.

Brookhaven, Miss. (AP) -- Fire that swept through a rambling frame nursing home killed six persons Friday, despite the rescue efforts of a nurse's aide. Eight other persons fled to safety.
Lincoln County authorities said nurse's aide CHRIS CARNLEY made repeated trips into the structure trying to rouse the occupants.
King's Daughters Hospital said MRS. CARNLEY received first and second degree burns on her shoulders and JOHN ARMSTRONG, an elderly resident, had burns on his hands.
Chief Deputy C. H. Jordan said he reached the burning structure minutes after the alarm sounded and MRS. CARNLEY already "was shook up and burned some herself. Some of the people told me she went back and forth."
"She told me 'I did everything I could do .. to get those people out of the home.' The house was too far gone then to make another effort."
The hospital said the other eight residents of Moore's Rest Home were hospitalized for observation and that all were doing well.
