Indianola, MS Truck And Car Collide, Dec 1952
CHRISTMAS EVE CRASH KILLS 8.
Indianola, Miss. -- (UP) -- A young Negro mother, her four daughters and three other persons died in a headon collision of a tractor-trailer truck and a car carrying seven Negroes on a highway near here.
M. A. RICHARDSON of Indianola, Miss., who reached the scene shortly after the crash, reported "wreckage and bodies were strewn for yeards up and down the highway."
A lone survivor of the Christmas Eve tragedy was CREOLA ALLEN, Negro, about 38, who remained in critical condition in a hospital here today. Her husband, CLAUDE ALLEN, about 40, listed as driver of the car, was one of the dead.
TROY FRANKLIN HUMBIS, 35, Greenwood, Miss., was burned to death in the cab of his truck, authorities reported.
Other victims were identified as LIZZIE LARD, 22, and her daughters, MILDRED JEAN, 4, IDA MAE, 2, ROSA MAE, 20 months, and SOL HAZARD, about 60, all Negroes of nearby Inverness, Miss.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol said the crash occurred on a slight curve on United States Highway 49W near a bridge about three miles south of here.
The truck apparently was on the wrong side of the highway, patrolmen said.
