HARD FIGHT WITH FIRE.
The Business Portion of Staples, Minn., About Wiped Out.

Staples, Minn., May 26. – Over one-third of the business portion of Staples is in ashes. The burned district comprises over twenty-five buildings. The fire started from an overturned lamp in Henry Shulz’s tailor shop on First avenue at 11:30 last night. The flames spread rapidly spread to adjoining buildings. A strong easterly wind was blowing and the whole town seemed to be doomed. With buckets, one stream of water from the Northern Pacific round house and the fire apparatus from Verandle, the flames were finally gotten under control. The total losss [sic] is estimated at $50,000 covered by about $20,000 insurance. The following were burned out: C. F. Atwood, drugs; Penny & Son, bakery; G. Raymond, restaurant; H. Schulz, tailor; Underwood, marble work; Gish building; C. A. Remillard, saloon; W. Y. Cook, law office; B. Vetch, M. Siefert, residence; W. J. Lewis, warehouse and barn; B. Vetch, carpenter shop.
