Chisholm, MN Fire, Sept 1908 - Teachers Suffered
Chisholm Teachers Suffered Heavily
(Range Bureau of the News Tribune.)
Chisholm, Sept. 10.-The teachers of the city schools in many instances lost heavily in the recent fire. Sixteen teachers lost nearly everything they had except some who carried suit cases full of clothes with them. Some had no hats left.
One of the teachers, describing her experience said: “I had just had my trunk sent to my rooms and begun to unpack at 11 o’clock in the morning. At 3:30 o’clock in the afternoon I went there again with my suitcase. I watched the fire awhile and very soon saw that the town was in danger. The wind raged fiercely and the fire jumped rods in its mad career.
Taking in the situation, I immediately packed my trunk again, locked it and roped it. The man who was to take it couldn’t get to it, but luckily that part of town didn’t burn. We got into a big wagon and found out in a few minutes that our high school building was safe and so decided to go there. All the big fire hose was in readiness to use and the building was kept thoroughly soaked.
