Sleepy Eye, MN Lahey House Fire, Mar 1892
ROASTED ALIVE.
A Minnesota Man, His Four Sons and a Daughter Are Cremated in Their Home.
SLEEPY EYE, Minn., March 22. -- The dwelling of JOHN LAHEY, living six miles south of Springfield, caught fire about 8 o'clock Monday morning and LAHEY and four sons and one daughter perished in the flames. The only one of the entire family to escape was a 14-year-old son, who pulled his father from the building, but too late to save his life. The five children were sleeping upstairs when the fire broke out. Hemmed in by the fire, they were unable to escape and the floor broke with their weight, throwing them all into the cellar, where they were roasted alive in an improvised oven.
MRS. LAHEY had left home the night before to attend a sick friend, or she, too, would probably have been a victim. MR. LAHEY was about 65 years of age and the children range from 9 to 22 years of age. The cause of the fire is unknown.
