St. Cloud, MN Train And Auto Collision, Dec 1971

St. Paul, Minn. (AP) -- Four young persons from South St. Paul, Minn., were killed in a car-train collision Wednesday night on the outskirts of St. Cloud.
Their deaths -- along with that of a Maple Plain, Minn., woman -- raised the state's 1971 traffic toll to 940, nine ahead of last year's pace.
St. Cloud police said the car carrying the four young people was hit broadside by a north-bound Burlington Northern passenger train about 9:40 p.m. at a crossing with no lighted signals in the southeast section of the city.
Police identified the victims as STEVEN JANEARIE, 19, and MAUREEN MOLITOR, 18, both St. Cloud State students; CARRIE VIRGIN, 17, and GLEN NOVACK, no age available, a University of Minnesota student.
NOVACK died in a St. Cloud hospital a short time after the accident. The others were dead at the scene. Police said all were thrown out of the car and it could not be determined who was driving.
MRS. LORETTE BUDD, 67, was killed in a head-on crash Wednesday on U.S. 12 one-half mile east of Maple Plain. She was the lone occupant of a car which collided with one driven by James Franklin, 24, of Maple Plain.
