South Wellngton, BC Mining Rock Slide Accident, Dec 1940

THREE MEN KILLED IN ROCK SLIDE AT NANAIMO MINE.

Nanaimo, B.C., Dec. 23. -- Three men were killed Sunday in a rock slide in the No. 4 heading of Canadian Collieries Ltd., coal mine at South Wellington, eight miles south of here.
The body of JAMES WARING, 42, miner, was recovered shortly after the slide occurred and Sunday night rescue crews located the bodies of EUGINO GAVA, miner, and CHRISTOPHER MILLS, fire boss.
Mine officials said that lack of air was hampering rescue work, and until ventilation in that part of the mine was restored it would be impossible to remove the bodies. It was believed that this would be done today.
According to reports, said mine officials, a small localized explosion took place, and was followed by the rock slide which trapped the men.
Cramped working conditions prevented use of a large rescue crew. It was not known if all the men were killed instantly.
