Escanaba, MI Lighthouse Fire, Mar 1886

the new lighthouse

A FATAL FIRE.

A LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER BURNED IN HER HOUSE.

Chicago, March 5. -- The Inter-Ocean's Escanaba, Mich., special says: The lighthouse on Sand Point, Escanaba, was destroyed by fire this morning. When the fire was discovered, about 10 o'clock, nothing could be done to save the building or contents, as the flames were bursting from the roof, windows and doors. MRS. MARY G. TERRY, the lighthouse keeper, perished in the house. The fire is supposed to have caught from the furnace, as it was in bad condition. Others advance the theory of robbery, as MRS. TERRY was a woman of means and lived alone.
Only a small portion of the skull and a few bones were recovered. The lighthouse was completed in 1868, and MRS. TERRY has had charge since. She was 69 years of age.
