Blissfield, MI Hathaways Sawmill Boiler Explosion, Jan 1893

Injured by a Boiler Explosion.

ADRIAN, Mich., Jan. 23.---Nine persons were severely injured Saturday night by the explosion of a boiler in the engine room of H. B. Hathaways' sawmill at Blissfield, this county. Engineer Luke Lanew, George Hathaway, and a youth named Malone, who were in the mill at the time, were buried under a mass of debris and were not rescued for nearly an hour. In the first house south, a distance of fifty=feet, G. Josenhans, his wife and three children, were sitting at the supper table, when one end of the boiler, accompanied by brick and coal, came crashing through the side of the house without two feet of the table. All received injuries from flying missiles, which completely demolished the house.
