Dowagiac, MI Light Plane Crashes In Lake Michigan, Oct 1966

HUNT MISSING LIGHT PLANE.

Charlevoix (UPI) -- Civil Air Patrol planes today combed the Lake Michigan shoreline and an area 50 miles inward in their search for a small private
plane with six persons aboard missing since late Sunday.
CAP officials said the plane, a single-engine Piper Cherokee, may have run into thunderstorms and winds up to 30 miles an hour which whipped the area Sunday night.
Coast Guard boats were also expected to help continue the search today.
Col. ROGER BURGESS of the CAP said the plane was not heard from again after it left this northern Michigan City about 6 p.m. Sunday on a two-hour flight to South Bend, Ind.
Aboard were the charter pilot ROY NYE and his wife, Warsaw, Ind.; RAY SMITH, 41, and his wife, BONNIE, 41, Osceola, Ind.; and two women relatives of the SMITHS, ERMA VORIES, 65, and RAMONDO OVERMEYER, 60, both of Mishawaka, Ind.
BURGESS said the four passengers chartered the plane in South Bend early Sunday and flew here to see a sick relative.
More than 25 CAP planes and several Coast Guard boats searched for the red, white and tan craft Monday after the SMITH'S son JAMES, notified authorities the plane had not returned.
A number of CAP planes worked out of Traverse City today as weather permitted, and Traverse City Coast Guard air station also took part in the search.
